When batteries are connected in series the flow of
electrons, (current), is the same anywhere in the circuit.
But the potential difference of all the batteries gets added
together.
Hence, batteries in series produce a voltage equal to the
number of batteries multiplied by the voltage of each
individual battery.
For example,
If two batteries of 12v each connected in series will give
you an output voltage of 24V.

We know that electrons flow from negative to positive directions and the current flow the opposite direction. In the batteries their are two polarity one is pos.(+) and another is neg.(-) so that when two batteries connected in the series then due to same directions of flow current the, voltage get added.
In other case when two batteries connected in the parallel than the same polarity of the charges so that repulsion get occured hence the voltage get subtracted.

It can be understood with the help of resistance as Every battery has internal resistance lets r1 r2 & r3, connected in series, thus R = r1+r2+r3. LETS output voltage is V and current is I Amps.
As by ohms law V=IR
V/I = v1/I + v2/I + v3/I ( current is same in series connection)
i.e. V= v1+v2+v3
Thus, voltages are added when batteries are connected in series.
