although concrete is good in compresive strength but it is indeed weak in tensile strength a combination of both steel and concrete is better to take both compressive and tensile loads

Though a compressive member we design column to resist tensile stresses too.any point load on a column concentrated other than its axis results in tensile stresses in some part and compressive in other.moreover we keep in mind wind,earth quake,and other possible situations too.

if we want to reduce the column we will go for steel column
and also steel building construction is very easy and we able to do complete quickly
