Shunt compensation improves power factor of load whereas series compensation has very little effect on load power factor. For a long transmission line where total reactance is large, series capacitors are more effective for improvement of stability.

by compensation we mean reducing losses,if the load at user
end is inductive in nature we use shunt compensation
(capacitive in nature) while if the load at user end is
capacitive we use series compensation(inductive in nature)

Answer / saida
compensation is required to put the constant voltage at
receiving end.
the both series and shunt commentators are same but in the
case of series compensator the losses will be more.
