A VFD motor is a motor that is compatible to be run with a VFD.
First off, in come applications, we need to vary the speed of the motor as per condition. Ex:- when the lift begins to move up, we need less speed to avoid jerk, then take up full speed. Also, we need to stop the lift slowly to prevent jerk.
So, to control the speed, we control the frequency of the current supply. (Variable Frequency Drives).
The formula is N=(120*f)/P. N is the max speed of the motor in RPM, 120 is constant, f is frequency, P is the number of poles in the motor.
Now you can't change the no. of poles in the motor. Hence, you change the frequency, which is directly proportional to the speed of the motor.
The VFD is also an intelligent device that you can program for timers, trips, alarms etc. It monitors the current intake of the motor etc.
