A Generator is in running condition and Rotor earth fault
alarm is coming. How to check on line(i.e in running
condition) whether there is actual earth fault in rotor or
not.
Answer / Mayank Jaitly
To diagnose a rotor earth fault in a generator while it is running, follow these steps:
1. Ensure that the power supply to the generator is isolated and lockout/tagout procedures are followed for safety.
2. Inspect the voltage regulator settings to ensure they are correct for the load conditions.
3. Check the grounding system for any loose or damaged connections, including the rotor ground.
4. Measure the resistance between the generator frame and the ground. A low value indicates a possible earth fault.
5. Perform an insulation resistance test to verify the integrity of the insulation between windings and ground.
6. Inspect the rotor shaft for any signs of damage, such as cracks or wear.
7. Check the rotor winding resistances to ensure they are within acceptable limits.
