An Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a device used to maintain the output voltage of power sources, such as generators or power supplies, within a specified range. It automatically adjusts the field current of an alternator to regulate its output voltage. To control the voltage using a fuzzy controller in MATLAB, you would first define the fuzzy logic rules for the desired output (voltage regulation) based on the input variables (such as error and change in error). Fuzzy logic is used because it allows for approximate reasoning that can handle uncertainties and non-linearities better than traditional control methods.
