Calibration is nothing but comparisonof an unknown standard
with an known standard or in other words it is known as
checking the output is proportional to the input or not.
Loop checking is nothing but the instrument installed in
the field must give the signal to the control room without
any break. First in this the continuity of the cable will
be checked from inst to JB in field side and from the JB to
control room.

Loop check used to check the Field Instruments activity and
continuity from Field to DCS/PLC.
Field Instruments forced/simulated from filed and value
will be confirmed with DCS/PLC.
For Valves, value simulated from DCS/PLC and position will
be confirmed from the field.

Calibration of an instrument is a comparison to a known
standard. Eg. if i need to calibrate a weighing scale, then
we need a known weight for comparison. A known standard
have to be certified by certfying body like NIST.
Loop check is a continuity test coming from/to field to
junction box and junction box to/from Control system.
