1.thermal power plants are usualy used to generate steam
for processing purpose or for generating power for grid
supply while captive power plants are usualy used in oreder
to generate power for company's own purpose...
2.thermal power plants use coal or oil as fuel while
captive power plants are usualy cogeneration power plants
which uses natural gas or high speed diesel as fuel...
3.efficeincy of captive power plants is much higher as most
of the energy is extracted as compared to thermal power
plant...

Thermal power plant is a power plant which generates power
with coal and water whereas captive power plant is the
status of power plant. Power generated by any type of fuel
such as coal,naptha,furnace oil but if 51% of the generated
power is consumed by the generator itself( captive used)
then that is a captive power plant. There are much more
requirements for a plant tobe said as Captive Power plant
but this much is suffcient to know the difference
