OUR METER READER TAKE READING OF INDUSTRIAL CONSUMER.THEY
ALWAYS ASK HOW TO INCREASE POWER FACTOR FROM 60% TO 99 % TO
AVOID PENALTY OF POWER FACTOR.

Answer / zahid noor
Power Factor can be improved by installing Capacitors at
the end of consumer, why it is required, in order to
fulfill the loss during transmission of power to the end
of consumer, henceforth if consumer installs additional
capacitors for making this loss, penalty for PF below .95
can be avoided & for PF above .95 to unity , extra rebate
on monthly bills can be availed. Henceforth It is always
beneficial to achieve PF up to Unity.
In order to calculate the KVAR of capacitors to be
installed, it is required to know the details of consumer
regarding load, voltage level, type of load, switching
operations of load so as to finalize the capacity required
for achieving the same.

The power factor is low for industrial customer because the load is usually inductive due to the many motors installed.
Power supply companies sell by calculating KWH used.Thier generators maximum capacity is limited by the amps the generator can produce at a fixed voltage.
So calculations will tell u that lower power factor means higher amps for the same KWH &AND HIGHER PF MEANS LOWER AMPS for the same kwh. thus the power supply companies can make more money from the same generator and also save on other expenses.
power factor is improved by connecting reactive load in parallel.this reactive power is loss free and you dont pay for the power consumption.

Answer / t.mohan
POWER FACTOR = REAL POWER / REACTIVE POWER.KWH/KVRH.
FOR INCREASING POWER FACTOR PROVIDE CAPACITOR BANK AT
CONSUMER'S END.

We have 800KW motor operating at 6600Volt,50 Hz supply.During 1st startup it tripped on overcurrent trip. It's FLA is 88 Amps. The K factor of Thermal overloaaad was set on .94 initially.then we set at 0.97 and then it started fine.i dont understand why it tripped first? What are the protections which comes in picture during starting ?
