I have a 600VA UPS for computer only. It holds for
20minutes only.
1. Can it be upgraded for longer period.?
2. Can it be used for one ceiling fan and a tube light? If
yes, how to upgrade?

The 600va ups is designed for used upto 360 watts(max)
capacity of load. This type of ups can have in-built battery
(12v/7AH)&specially designed for computer systems.Any other
external higher ampere lead-acid batteries are not suitable
for this circuit. If we need to use 40W tubelight, you may use
electronic ballest only, becuse it can have the capacity to
work successfull in both sine wave and square wave outputs
our 600va home CPU ups output rating is square wave this is
not suitable for using coil items. suppose you used coil
items it produce whistiling sound.By this ceiling fan is
comes under coil item, so our home CPU ups is not suitable
for connect ceiling fans.
The following electronic itens are suitable for using this
type of home CPU ups.
(1)CPU(central processing unit)
(2)CRT moniter& LCD,LED monitors
(3)LCD TV
(4)DVD players
(5)40Watts electronic choke tube lights
(6)CFL lamps&smps type electronic items
Note: The time back-up is differ from the wattage used.
eg:20Watts CFL lamps stands glow for 2.30 hours.

i think it is not possible because i have already
experimented with that idea if increasing battery ah but
after discharge of battery it is not possible to charge the
60 ah battery with the ups inbuilt charging system as if ups
charging current is 1 ah then it will take 60 hour to charge
the battery.
to overcome this u need to charge the battery by using
external charger and cutoff the up charging process

Of course you need to put a higher amp/hr battery but you
need to check the amp rating of transformer as well as the
MOSFET because after complete discharge battery will demand
higher current for charging and in that case MOSFET must
withstand that high current otherwise it will heat up and
burnout.

u r telling that it holds for 20 mins. But in practice it
doesnt last more than 4/5 mins. does it ? Actually it
depends. A 600 VA UPS running from a typical 12 volts 7.5Ah
battery can handle 600 x 0.8(pf)x75%(eff)=360 watts of load
only. There are many other facts that im not breaking down
right now.
The fact is simply this. U can prolong your backup time by
adding higher ampere-hour battery like 12 volt 8Ah or
maximum 12 volt 12Ah but not more. If u want more backup
u'll need much higher AH rated battery (like 40Ah) and at
the same time u must upgrade your battery charger to a
higher level otherwise those heavy batteries will take
forever to charge fully /partially or whatever. Bottom line
is u just have to spend more bucks not only for battery but
also the built in circuitry mounted with the UPS.
Both the ceiling fan and tube lights(which includes
ballast)have raw power factors (0.6~0.75) That means an 80
watts fan can consume upto 115 watts of power. To drive
those loads u not only need high amps battery but also high
volt-ampere machine (eg. 1200 VA)

yes u can upgrade it by upgrading battery of higher Amp Hour
Capacity in UPS.

Answer / venkat vinay vikram
This can not be upgraded due to current rating of in-built
battery charger.
Of course this can be used for ceiling fan and tube light
but the backup will not be much. I have used the UPS of
computer for watching Portable B&W TV.
Try your table fan on this.

There is something you can do, you have to purchase a battery charger for batteries of higher Ah ratings.
Then working with little circuits (relays ans transistors)(you have to do it yourself with a little internet help).
Now you can use external chargers for charging and discharge it using UPS. This extends the backup time, but computer UPS are not applicable to celling fans or so. TAKE CAUTIONS YOU MAY LOSE YOUR UPS IF NOT USED ON SPECIFICATION RATING).
THESE ARE VERY DELICATE MACHINES.
THANKYOU

Well, I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone to do anything to increase their battery backup other than that is provided by the ups. Also there is one possibility that can be done. Connecting two 12v 7.5Ah batteries increase the current in the circuit but keeps the voltage same(one of the most important thing when working with batteries). And Ah of a battery is Amperes per hour, which means that a 7.5 Ah battery can provibe upto 7.5 amps of DC current depending on the load. I recommend this only if your load requires more power than the ups supplies l,keeping in mind that the ups is also able to produce the required power.

Answer / vishnu.k
if u connect batteries parallel u will get more Ah,say if
connect two 15 Ah battery you will get around 30 Ah,and if u
connect batteries in series you will get more back up time
also,so u can solve both problems, but initially you must
have to verify that the transformer and the IGBT OR MOSFET
should withstand this situation.

I agree with Answer # 4, but in addition i would like to
suggest to add more batteries in series to extend the backup
period.
thanks
