what is the difference between squirrel cage & slip ring
induction motor?

The windings on the rotor of a squirrel cage motor is
comprised of aluminum (or sometimes copper) bars embedded
in the steel laminations of the rotor. The ends of the
rotor bars are shorted together by rings at each end of the
rotor. There is no external electrical connection to the
rotor. The bar and ring structure looks like an exercise
wheel for a pet squirrel.
The rotor of a slip-ring motor is wound with wire coils.
The ends of the windings are connected to slip rings so
that resistors or other circuitry can be inserted in series
with the rotor coils through carbon brushes that slide on
the slip-rings allowing an electrical connection with the
rotating coils.

Answer / ch.madhu
in squirrel cage motors rotor will be shortcircuited, so we
cannot introduce any external resistance... where as in
slip ring we can introduce external resistance..so we csn
get high starting torque in slipring ind. motor.

Slipring:
1. Having a Rotor winding
2. Need a starter to start
3. High starting torque
4. It's Have a slipring and brush to get a rotor power
5. Maintenance is high
Squirel cage I/M:
1. Rotors are having short circuited copper bars
2. Self starting one(Need not having a starter)
3. Low starting torque
4. There is no slipring and brush
5. Maintenance is low

the starting current of a slip ring induction motor can be
controlled easily by the use resistance tapping but in
squirrel cage induction motor the starting current can'nt
be contolled so the speed.

1. Almost 90 per cent motor used in industry is squirrel-
cage motor. It is low price and low maintenance cost.
Slip-ring motor opposite of squirrel-cage motor.
2. Squirrel-cage rotor consists of cylindrical laminated
core with parallel slots. There are no wire winding but
consists of heavy bars of copper, aluminum or alloys and
all slots are short by End-ring.
Slip-ring rotor consisting with 3-phase, double-layer
winding of copper coils and it’s short by slip-ring through
external resistance.
3. It is not possible to add any external resistance in
series with the rotor circuit.
There is used an external resistance in series with the
rotor circuit by carbon brushes which is mounted on slip-
ring.
4. It’s stator circuit can be change by star or delta with
suitable requirement.
It’s stator circuit internally short by star connection.
Not possible to change in delta connection.
5. Squirrel-cage motor speed cannot control, If we are not
connected any variable drives.
Slip-ring motor speed can control by it’s external
resistance which is connected in series with rotor winding.
6. The starting torque per ampere is very low and goes to
full-load torque it have 1.5 times although the starting
current is 5 to 7 times the full-load current . The motor
has not useful to start against heavy loads.
Increases the rotor impedance due to addition of external
resistance and so reduce the rotor current. Starting torque
is increased but after a certain point, the effect of
increased impedance predominates the effect of improved
power factor and the torque starts decreasing.

Answer / dhananjai d.k
squirrel cage rotor is simply a cage structure i.e copper
or aluminum bars short circuited at each end by which
providing a close path to induced current. In squirrel cage
rotor no starting current can be added so the starting
current is generally very high 5 to 6 time of rated full
load current and it has high starting torque. Squirrel cage
rotor is not designed for any number of pole in it
automatically number of pole equivalent to stator get developed.
While wound or slip ring induction motor is
simply a copper 3 phase winding wound for equivalent number
of pole as that of stator and all the winding are short
circuited through a slip ring . In slip ring type motor
external resistance can be added and thereby starting
current can be reduced, Generally slip ring induction motor
is used as adjustable speed drive bcoz its operating
characteristic can be modified according to our need.
