COMMUTATORS IS USED ALONGWITH THE BRUSH TO PROVIDE UNI-
DIRECTIONAL CURRENT AND TORQUE FROM THE ARMATURE
AND IT CONVERS AC TO DC IN DC MOTOR OR GENERATOR

ACTUALLY COMMUTATOR WAS USED TO ENERGISE THE WINDING FOR DC MOTORS
AND FOR GENERATORS COLLECTS THE EMF FROM ROTOR

Answer / kalaimagal
In dc motor actually dc supply will be given as source for
excitation.the function of commutator is to convert the ac
supply to dc supply,it same as rectifier function.

Answer / anil bhatia
commutator is basically a midiam by which current is passed
through from fixed conductor to rotating field of rotor or
vise versa.

Answer / bhagya
sir actually the function of the motor is to convert
electrical to mechnical energy but wat is the purpose of
commutator in dc motor.if we ll not give ac supply

Answer / anbuselvan.g
Motor is always convert Electrical power into Mechanical Power.
Here in DC motor, we just give AC supply as Electrical
Power, the Commutator will convert or rectify the AC into DC
to its windings.
It is also called as Rotating Rectifier.
The same function happen in DC generator which convert
Induced AC power in Armature into DC power to their loads.

commutator reverses the flow of current. In order to develop
mechanical force.
