friend karthick what u r telling man............How we can
change the composition of material .........
Ductile materials can fail like brittle manner under
following conditions.
1.Low temperature
2.increased loading rate
3.The quality of the critical size of the defect/crack to
the material scale of the crack length

friend karthick.........the question is at what conditions a
ductile material can fail like brittle manner( means abrupt
failure without warning)..............usually ductile
materials fail after deformation.no all of suuden..but under
certain circumstances.......they will fail
suddenly.......such as increased loading rate...at low
temperature conditions.......etc...still
confusion.exists........

ductile mamterial(MS)undergoes failure in brittle manner
during fatigue failure, fatigue failure occurs in 3 stages:
1. crack initiation
2. crack propagation
3. brittle fracture...
the other answers found are partially correct or wrong...

yes Renjit is right that low temperature is responsible
for that.
according to my view another important thing which would
play its role is abiously load ,but not as ssaid by Renjith:
it is impact load.(sudden load)

yes..at very low temp some ductile materials like steel
tranforms from ductile to brittle..in steel this is termed
as blue brittleness...after this it can fail in brittle
manner.........

Answers that I have viewed so far are only partly correct
in my opinion. As per the answers, when ever the material
is failing, it is not ductile but brittle. LOw temperature,
fatigue conditions, etc.
I feel that the questioner is looking for answers like how
is it possible for a material to fain through shear during
a tensile loading condition. Remember, this happens to MS
during a tensile test on the UTM?
Keep at it boys!!

Hey guys....
Ductile materials do undergo brittle fracture if an impurity of low melting point such as zinc, cadmium is added to high melting point materials such as iron and occupy the sites at grain boundary. Then during heating low melting point metal will melt first and grain boundaries slides on one another and fails in the brittle manner.
The other reason is at low temperatures metal fails in brittle manner.
