Traditionally, these are DC series-wound motors, usually
running on approximately 600 volts. The availability of
high-powered semiconductors (such as thyristors and the
IGBT) has now made practical the use of much simpler,
higher-reliability AC induction motors known as
asynchronous traction motors.

DC series motor is used in traction. DC series motor
produces high torque at low speed, which is required during
starting of train as it (Train) has got high inertia at
starting.
Three phase induction motor is also used in high speed
train e.g. RAJDHANI EXPRESS.

SlipRing induction motor, because we can get high starting
torque by adding resistor to it's rotor.
We can change the torque as per our requirement.

in railway system many type of moters are used, like AC or
DC type. in AC type motor we generaly used slipring
induction motor as a traction motor. but now a days we
preffer linear induction motor as a traction motor. and in
europien country which is used.
