An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures electrical activity in the brain by detecting and recording brainwaves. The EEG shows various types of wave patterns, each associated with different states of consciousness: Alpha waves (8-13 Hz) are seen during relaxed wakefulness; Beta waves (14-30 Hz) are associated with active thinking or concentration; Gamma waves (31-100 Hz) are linked to perception and learning; Delta waves (0.5-4 Hz) are present during deep sleep or unconsciousness; and Theta waves (4-8 Hz) are associated with daydreaming or meditation.
