In AC mode, a voltmeter shows the root mean square (RMS) value of the voltage, not the peak value. The RMS value is a measure of the effective or equivalent DC voltage that would produce the same power as the AC signal. It takes into account the time-varying nature of the AC signal and provides a more meaningful measurement for many applications.
