For a 1φ voltage controller, feeding a resistive load, draw the waveforms of source voltage, gating signals, output voltage and voltage across the scr. Describe the working with reference to waveforms drawn?
Answer / Singh Udayraj Hemchandra
In a 1φ voltage controller feeding a resistive load, the input AC voltage waveform (Vs) is passed through four thyristors in a bridge configuration. The gate signals for the thyristors are controlled to vary the firing angle. The output DC voltage waveform (Vout) will have a shape that is determined by the firing angle and the waveform of the source voltage.nnThe voltage across the SCR (Vscr) will be equal to the output DC voltage during conduction, and zero when the thyristor is not conducting. The holding current in the SCR will cause a small offset voltage during non-conduction periods.nnThe working of the converter can be understood by observing the waveforms:
1. During the positive half cycle of the input voltage, if the firing angle is less than 90 degrees, the thyristors turn on and conduct, causing a DC output voltage to build up.
2. During the negative half cycle, the thyristors are turned off, and the DC output voltage remains constant until the next positive half cycle.
