The graphite in grey irons exists in the form of flakes which act as stress-raisers under tensile loading and consequently grey irons have relatively low tensile strength and ductility. Still grey iron is extensively used in engineering. Why ?

Answer / Lavkush Kumar Singh

Grey cast iron is widely used in engineering applications despite its lower tensile strength and ductility due to several factors: 1) Low cost compared to other materials; 2) Good machinability, making it easy to work with; 3) Excellent castability, allowing for complex shapes to be easily produced; 4) High damping capacity, which makes it useful in vibration isolation and noise reduction applications; 5) Good wear resistance; and 6) Ability to create gray iron castings with varying hardness levels through heat treatment methods such as annealing or flake graphite spheroidization.
