1) Explain why we don't link the two earthing system ht and mv on a pole mounted transformer sub-station.
Answer / Vishal Kumar
HT (High Tension) and MV (Medium Voltage) earthing systems should not be linked in a pole-mounted transformer substation due to safety concerns and operational considerations. Here are some reasons:
1. Different voltage levels: HT and MV systems operate at significantly different voltages, which can create hazardous conditions if they are improperly connected.
2. Ground potential rise (GPR): Linking the two earthings can cause ground potential rise, which might induce undesirable currents in nearby neutral conductors, leading to equipment damage or even electrical fires.
3. Insulation coordination: The insulation between phases and between phase and earth is designed based on specific voltage levels. Mixing HT and MV systems can lead to improper insulation coordination and increased risk of accidents.
