characteristic compressive strength is strength of concrete, if group of samples are tested, 95% of samples have strength above it.
But compressive strength is strength of sample under axially compression loaded sample.

The difference is only in the manner of expression. Both the terms give us an idea of the strength of the material.
Consider concrete as an example. Concrete serves us well here since the characteristic strength of concrete is the parameter widely used to analyze and define the strength
For a cube of concrete, the compressive strength would be the resistance of that particular cube (or sample) to compressive load. It is measured by applying a certain compressive load and noting the load it can take before failure.
Characteristic strength of concrete would also give us the compressive strength of a particuar mix of concrete. However, determining the characteristic strength would involve testing a number of samples in the manner mentioned above and finding the compressive load that more than 95% of the samples can take.
Thus, while compressive strength gives us the strength of a single sample, characteristic strength would give us the probable strength based on a number of samples, which would be a more realistic assessment. It takes into account the variations due to improper mixing and distribution of the constituents of concrete.
The units used to express both the parameters are the same.
