Why reactive power is needed in a power system? How is it being absorbed or delivered by alternators? For reactive power control we are changing excitation but reactive power absorbing or delivering related to stator. How these two are interlinked? i want a detailed explanation with necessary expressions and figures?

Reactive power (Q) is essential in a power system because it maintains the voltage stability of the network, facilitates power transmission over long distances, and helps in power factor correction. Reactive power can be absorbed or delivered by alternators (generators) based on the operating condition.nnGenerally, reactive power can be either lagging (Ql) or leading (Qr). When a generator produces more current leading the voltage, it delivers reactive power (Qr), and when it produces less current leading the voltage, it absorbs reactive power (Ql).nnThe generation of reactive power by alternators is related to the excitation of the field winding. The excitation system controls the amount of magnetic flux produced in the generator, which in turn affects the reactive power generated or absorbed.nnFor a synchronous generator, the relationship between active power (P), reactive power (Q), and the voltage angle (δ) can be expressed by the following equation:nnP = V * I * cos(δ)nQ = V * I * sin(δ)nWhere P is the active power, Q is the reactive power, V is the RMS voltage, I is the current flowing through the circuit, and δ is the phase angle difference between voltage and current.nnFigures illustrating the relationships between active power, reactive power, and excitation can be found in electrical engineering textbooks.
