notch is the device used for the measurement of the rate of flow of liquids through small channels at tanks where as orifice is used to measure rate of flow through pipes.

An orifice is provided in side or the bottom of tanks to transfer the fluids. And generally, the upstream fluids occupy majority of area of orifice (neglected vena contracta) . Whereas, notches are provided on the side of the tanks to determine the flow rate of liquid. And generally the liquids in notches, do not touches the upper edges of notches.
