why a pilot exciter is used in combination with the main exciter?
why not only a main exciter is used for excitation to an alternator?
Answer / ud
Pilot exciter is used in combination with main exciter to increase the quickness of response of the excitation system.
In case of increase in reactive power demand(voltage stability) or sudden load changes( transient stability) , the excitation system must respond very quickly.
By using pilot exciter, quickness of response is increased.
