to postporn the initial setting time of concrete... why because if we need transport the concrete so far. we can't control the initial setting time in ordinary concrete so we use slow setting admixture to extend the initial setting time of concrete.

Normally in mass concrete heat of hydration gets
comparatively more which could become a vital reason for
shrinkage crack.
As concrete sets slow, rate of hydration would be less and
hence heat of hydration will be less and as a result we can
avoid shrinkage crack due to extra heat.

slow setting admixture or retarder which is type-B according to ASTM 494 is used to slow down the setting time of concrete.Sometimes the batching plants are far away from the construction sites so in that case we have to use some chemicals to delay the setting time of concrete.
sugar is the commonly used retarder.Its usage depends upon the temperature of concrete,ambient temperature,dosage rate,type of admixtures etc
