Is there a lower limit to the gland surface finish for
static O-rings, gaseous system?
surface finish table lists 0.41-0.81 micro-meters for static
gaseous systems. What is the drawback of using a smoother
surface finish lower than 0.41?
Answer / Keerti Pandey
There isn't a strict lower limit to the gland surface finish for static O-rings in gaseous systems, but it should ideally be within the range mentioned (0.41-0.81 micrometers). Using a smoother surface finish below 0.41 micrometers might lead to increased sealing performance due to better conformability. However, it could also potentially increase the risk of extrusion or deformation of the O-ring under high pressure or load conditions.
