A burner is the device that provides fuel to heat up water or another medium, while a fire grate serves as the base for the burner and supports the combustion process. The fire grate in a boiler distributes ash and coal evenly across the burner's flames to improve efficiency. However, the furnace of a boiler is the enclosed space where combustion takes place.
