A surge tank is a storage reservior is
fitted at some suitable place between
the reservior and the turbine so that
when the valve is suddenly closed,
water fills up in this storage
reservior and maintains the pressure
in the pipe line..
The surge tank is to protect high
internal pressure, water hammering
effects etc.
