Design mix and Nominal mix
Design mix is that which is achieved by mixing different
quantities of aggregates and binder (Cement) by trial and
error to get the desired compressive strength for say M15.
M15 concrete may not be necessarily 1:2:4 for different
varieties of aggregates.
Nominal mix is the standardized mix achieved by designing
which can be used without further designing in the
prescribed ratios like 1:2:4 or 1:1.5:3. These are never
denoted as M15 or M20
