stuffing box normally placed between a liquid and
atmosphere where a rotating part is coming out of the
liquid. normally this can be found in pump shaft inlet to
pumpcasing.

i would like to add afew things about stuffing box.
it is used where medium of material changes whether it is
solid to gas, liquid to gas or else.
it is widely used in steam turbines.
main usage of stuffing box is to prevent the leakage of
usefull fluid inside the system

it's mainly used in boats propeller shaft in order to avoid water entering into it while the turning action of the shaft take place....in simple "to prevent the leakage of liquid medium".
