Why is cover provided in beams, slabs, lintels, columns, etc ? What is the drawback of not providing cover in the same?

Cover is provided so that the reinforcement bars are
covered properly ¬ exposed to air & moisture which could
result in rusting in reinforcement

cover is provide because the steel get croded due to
atmospic conditions and it get rusted thats why steel is
provided

If a minimum cover say 50mm is not provide, the reinforcement
will directly exposed to to outer atmosphere which leads to
corrosion of steel
