why the cutoff frequency is taken for 3dB and not other
values like 1 or 2 db???

Answer / shivani
Cutoff frequency is the frequency at which GAIN is reduced
to (1/2)^0.5 of its midband value.
And if we find the gain in dB then it will be equql to 3dB.
Gain(db) = 20log(1/1.41)=3dB

The 3dB point is useful because it is the point at which
power is one half of the value within the passband of the
device being considered.

Human ear can not distinguish between maximum and 3DB
frequency level. 3DB is maximum permitted level, more then
3DB results in noticeable change. It saves power.........
