* For an induction machine:
at the time of starting if we can set the speed of the
machine is just less than its synchronous speed it works as
induction motor as we must give electrical power as input
at the time of starting if we can set the speed of the
machine is just higher than its synchronous speed it works
as induction Genearator as we must give Mechanical
(steam,hydral or diesel and so on) power as input
*For synchonous machine:
Its all depend on only the input of the machine

motor is a machine which converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy and generator is a machine which converts
mechanical energy into electrial energy.
So this depends on us that how we are using that machine .
if we will provide mechanical energy to its shaft then it
will start generating electrical power and you will call it
generator.
and if you will provide electical supply to it then it will
give mechanical power then you will call it motor
