Due to inductance of the winding coils. Inducitve load
absorb reactive power because it utilises this power for
the magnatising current.

Reactive power is produced by the synchronous generator basically due to the excitation current supplied to it. The VAR it can produce can be controlled by controlling the excitation current with the help of AVR.
