hi this is noor in my work spot, i arranged THERMOCOUPLE in
the place of RTD. (in FEED WATER tank). can i use T/C or not?

first of u have to confirm the temperature range in which
you are going to use the thermocouple in place of RTD
becouse the RTD response is better in low range and
thermocouple in high range. so if it is a high range then
deffinatly u can go for thermocouple. and u are going for
thermocouple then u have change loop configuration too as
o/p of thermocouple in mV.

You can use a Thermocouple in place of RTD but you need to
change your control loop instruments accordingly. As T/C
output will be mV where as RTD output is always change in
resistance. Please check the input of your measureing
instrument, if that is a universal input circuit then you
can use a T/C inplace of RTD.

For feed water service the process temp. is always below
300 Deg. C. So you can very much use a RTD. And in lower
range RTD is a better solution than T/C. As it has a linear
curve and no compensation required. And even the accuracy
of RTD is better than T/C. However you can very much use a
T/C if the control network allows.

yes, if thermocouple selection is suitable for the
operating temperature. Also you have to check if your
controller supports T/C signal or you have to had seperate
signal converter for that.

I M AGREE WITH ALL ABOVE ANS..BUT THE MAIN THING IS COST!!
RTD IS COSTLIER THAN T/C..

No T/C are not suitable replaced for RTD because feed water
tank temperature below 120 Deg C (max.).T/C are right used
above 300 Deg C

Yes u can use TC in the place of RTD, but check the
tempeatures range, again there a lot of things to see
whether Thermowell, suits the element or not.

Answer / vishok
No. Because in RTD Resistance increases proportional to
temperature. But in thermocouple the output is voltage in
millivolts. So to process such signal you need pre
amplifier, and for RTD U need a bridge circuit.
