What is the effect if power factor is above 1 or unity.

Answer / madhusudhan
Maintaining unity power factor reduces losses in
distribution and in switchgear system not in actual power
consumption. If we maintain the power factor above 1 there
will be more losses in distribution transformers and
capacitors(which are used to increase PF). The capacitive
power reduces the inductance power in transformer thereby
increasing the losses.

if power factor is one means it is a resistive load no
loses due to induction it is like a dc ckt

Answer / anusha reddy.m
If the power factor is unity that means the load is
resistive load and as the load with lpf wil draw high
current and load with high pf wil draw less current ,so we
have less losses and the pf can never bemore than 1 because
the cosine function varies a max. of 1.
Since load is resistive the output waveform is
purely a sinusoidal waveform without any diturbances

Voltage at transformer terminal increases. You can utilise
full KVA of transformer.Electricity company asks to
maintain pf near to unity to reduce the losses in
transmission as the current reduces reducing the I2R loses.
This is why we get incentive on energy charges from supply
company.

what happens when a DC supply is given to AC motor?
We have a couple of oil tanks at our plant. One of them does not have a lightning arrester installed. My question is it necessary to install an arrestor on every tank or will this particular one be covered by the arrestor installed on the ajdacent tank, Since all the tanks are close to each other. Basically, I want to know that if these arrestors or protection works in a parituclar area of effect or influence. Thanks
