capacitors are used to store charges ,improve power factor and also as a filter.....
but diode used as switching device,to rectify,as a free wheeling diode, to make a reference voltage for the circuit(zener diode),to emit light (light emitting diode)

The difference between a semiconductor diode and a
capacitor can be explained with the following example:
In an ac circuit, if you connect a capacitor between the
input and the output terminals, it charges upto its maximum
value in the first half cycle of the ac waveform, then
discharges and recharges with opposite polarity in the
negative half cycle of the waveform. Thus, a capacitor acts
as a short circuit for both the cycles of an ac waveform.
But, if you connect a p-n junction diode in a circuit, it
will be forward biased (and hence act as a short circuit)
for one half-cycle. It will act as an open circuit for the
other half-cycle when it becomes revverse biased due to
which it will act as an open circuit.

Capacitor is a passive component but diode is an active
component.
Diode is convert AC to DC but Capacitor is store the energy.
Diode use for rectification but capacitor is used for the
filteration.

diode is a unidirectional device i.e when connected in
forward bias it conduct and in reverse bias it does not
conduct also it converts AC to DC.
capacitor when connected in circuit does not allow current
to flow if it is fully charged.
it has a property to store energy.
capacitor when discharged gives waveshape similar to that
of dc.

Whenever a current is flowing in an a.c. circuit containing a capacitor, the current does not actually flow through the
capacitor physically. There is only charging and discharging of
the capacitor which makes the current flow continuous in the circuit. However, for a diode, the current actually flows through it when it is forward-biased.

Diode is an electronic device
which is made of
semiconducting material
normally silicon or
germanium and the purpose
of diode is it can act as a
switch(it allows flow of
electrons in one direction
and opposes in another
direction) and as a device in
rectifier(AC-DC). Capacitor is a
device which is used to store
the charges as well as to
oppose DC to pass through
it.
