Where the excitation is given either stator or rotor in
actually in power plants?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
in alternators, we recieve power from
stator side. Now rotor contains
electromagnet to generate poles...so that
rotating magnating field generated by
rotor cuts stator winding.. Hence emf is
generated on stator winding..
Now elecromagnet needs supply to
become magnet.. So excitation is given to
rotor.

Why excitation is required? If the voltage not developed in
field, because of poor resuidual voltage in stator.thats why
externely giving some dc less voltage to stator field for
improveing resudial voltage. Resuidal voltage means ,some
few flex has alwayes present in stator poles, that is a
Resuidal voltage.

Answer / shekhar
excitation i.e field winding is generally on rotor and
stator is connected to main line.
But it is not a hard and fast rule it could be either on
stator or rotor i.e why name alternator dnt confuse with
alternating current
