PID- proportional integral and derivative
there different types of controlling techniques,
combinations of these parameters in designing controllers.
it depends on what type of errror occurs in ur
system, deviation from ur set point, time u want ur
controller to take action.
if u want quick acting one then go for only proportional
controller, the disadvantage is you get higher deviation.
if u want to minimze error (measured-set value) go for
integrated controller,disadvantage-your final forms cyclic
fluctuations.
derivative is taken into acount when u want zero cycling
always it is not suggeted to go for PID controller,as it is
costly,ur system may not need it at all.for eg if u want to
control level of a tank with 2 feeds and one withdrawl u
dont need integral action so u can go for PD controller
only

PID is Proportional Integral and derivative Control.this
closed loop control system is the basis on which a DCS
works. In a Distributed Control system environment you will
find almost all the controllers are of PID type of
Controllers.

BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING INSTRUMENTATION - EXAMPLE 29.3 : In thin layer chromatography (TLC), let retention factor Rf = (distance traveled by solute) / (distance traveled by solvent). Silica gel is used as stationary phase which is more polar than the hexane solvent as mobile phase. If the Rf values of 3 solutes A, B and C are 1.5, 0.75 and 1 respectively, compare the polarities of A, B and C with reasons.
A concentric, counter-current heat exchanger is used to cool lubricating oil. Water is used as the coolant. The mass flow rate of oil into the heat exchanger is 0.1 kg / s = FO. For oil, the inlet temperature TIO = 100 degree Celsius and the outlet temperature TOO = 55 degree Celsius. For water, the inlet temperature TIW = 35 degree Celsius and the outlet temperature TOW = 42 degree Celsius. What is the mass flow rate of water in kg / s, FW needed to maintain these operating conditions? Constant for heat capacity of oil is CO = 2131 J /(kg K) and for water is CW = 4178 J /(kg K). Use the equation (FO)(CO)(TIO – TOO) = (FW)(CW)(TOW – TIW).

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING - QUESTION 25.1 : Fact 1 : Dry air contains 20.95 % oxygen, 78.09 % nitrogen, 0.93 % argon, 0.039 % carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases by volume. Fact 2 : Volume occupied is directly proportional to the number of moles for ideal gases at constant temperature and pressure. Fact 3 : 12.5 moles of pure oxygen is required to completely burn 1 mole of pure octane. Fact 4 : Air-fuel ratio (AFR) is the mass ratio of dry air to fuel present in a combustion process such as in an internal combustion engine or industrial furnace. Fact 5 : Molecular weight of oxygen gas is 31.998 g / mole and molecular weight of nitrogen gas is 28.014 g / mole. (a) Find the molar ratio of nitrogen and oxygen, or (moles of nitrogen) / (moles of oxygen) in dry air, by assuming ideal features of nitrogen and oxygen gases. (b) How many moles of nitrogen are available if dry air is used to completely burn the 1 mole pure octane? (c) Find the mass of fuel of 1 mole of octane with molecular weight of 114.232 g / mole. (d) Find the mass of dry air with 12.5 moles of pure oxygen by assuming only oxygen and nitrogen gases exist in the air. (e) Find the air-fuel ratio (AFR) when octane is used as fuel. (f) Find the fuel-air ratio (FAR) when octane is used as fuel.
