The name signifies the meaning that the Power is derated by
a factor. Real power is readuced by that factor, as the
reactive component which is in perpendicular to real power
is acting.
It can be improved by reducing the reactive component viz.
adding capacitors in the circuit.
Capacitive load leads the real power by 90degree and
inductive load lags the real power by 90degrees. Generally
electrical equipments are predominently inductive and hence
to compensate capacitors are added in the circuit, their by
improving the power factor.

Power factor is the cosine of the angle by voltage and load
current differ.
For example if there is a load of 1KW and the power factor
is 0.8 then the actual power utilized is 800 watts.
since all household equipments like
fans,grinder,refrigerator,washing machine etc. have motors
which are inductive loads this results in low power factor,
to improve power factor capacitors are used which restore
the phase diff.
