its a relay used for transformer protection.the of
buchholz relay locateed in oil tank bet ween main tank and
conservator tank. due to transformer winding heat.. bubbles
will be formed. those bobbles wil act the relay...first
signal from relay is alaram..and scound will trip the
circuit.

Buchholz relay is the Gas operated relay in which there are
two contact & contacts are installaed in such a way where
they can be get short by mercury when gas lift one portion.
If any fault take place in the transformer winding then it
will put a nagative impect & the insulation between two
winding start burning & due to this some gases starts
forming this gas go up & lift the moving side of Bucholz &
through the mercury tripping signal is givan to the relay
installed at HT breaker side & hence the Brekaer gets
tripped & Transformer gets isolated. Means Bucholz relay is
spically installed for protecion of transformer winding
which is physically invisible & for otherfault there is a
OT & WT is provide.

Buchholz relay is a safety device mounted on oil-filled
power transformers and reactors, equipped with an external
overhead oil reservoir called a conservator. In case of
internal fault such as overheating, arcing or decomposition
of insulating oil gas gets accumulated on the top of the
relay and forces the oil level down. A float switch in the
relay is used to initiate an alarm signal.
Buchholz relays have a test port to allow the accumulated
gas to be withdrawn for testing. Whereas air found in the
relay may only indicate low oil level or a leak.

Buchholz relay is located b/w conservator and the main tank
to remove all types of internal faults in oil immersed t/f
only...internal faults may b bubbles formation in
oil, heating winding.relay will activate during these faults
and disconnect the t/f from the main circuit...

Every reference that I have seen references the Buchholz
relay to the ANSI/IEEE Device Number (63). This means that
it is related to "pressure". Therefore the Buchholz relay
obviously responds to a "sudden" change in pressure inside
the transformer tank. In the USA we call these "sudden
pressure" relays. It is nothing more than a diaphram that
operates a micro-switch, if the pressure on one side of the
diaphram suddenly changes in reference to the other. It
does not operate if the pressure change is gradual. A
gradual but extreme pressure change would operate
a "pressure relief" device, similar to a "pop-off" device
on an air compressor.
