What factors can change the pKa value of an amino acid
residue, and in which direction?
Answer / Upasana Jyoti Tripathi
The pKa value of an amino acid residue can be affected by its environment within a protein or solution. Factors such as nearby charged groups (electrostatic interactions), hydrogen bonding, and solvent effects can shift the pKa value. In general, a decrease in pH will lower the pKa value, increasing the protonation state of acidic residues and vice versa.
