Explain when a sample of germanium and silicon having same impurity density are kept at room temperature then resistivity of silicon will be higher than that of germanium, why?

Explain when a sample of germanium and silicon having same impurity density are kept at room tempera..

Answer / Kuldeep Singh Rathor

Silicon has a larger bandgap energy (1.12 eV) compared to germanium (0.67 eV). This means that electrons require more energy to jump from the valence band to the conduction band in silicon than in germanium. Therefore, at room temperature, most of the electrons in silicon remain in the valence band and do not contribute to electrical conductivity, resulting in higher resistivity. In contrast, germanium has a lower resistance due to its lower bandgap energy, allowing more electrons to be free to move and conduct electricity.
