NPN (Normal-off Positive-off) and PNP (Positive-off Normal-on) are the two types of transistor configurations commonly used in sensors. NPN sensors have their base-emitter junction forward biased and collector-emitter junction reverse biased when no current is flowing through the base, resulting in a high input impedance. In contrast, PNP sensors have their base-emitter junction reverse biased and collector-emitter junction forward biased when no current is flowing through the base, also resulting in a high input impedance. The main difference lies in the polarity of the output voltage: NPN sensors produce a positive output voltage when activated, while PNP sensors produce a negative output voltage.
