generator is the same as alternator but the only difference is of power supply.when the supply used is ac the generator is called alternator.

The output of gen may be DC or AC, but of alternator it is
AC only

Alternator produces alternating current only But genator
means it produces both alternaing current & direct current.
But both almost same.
