A plot used by biologists to display the pairs of angles (ϕ,
ψ) that govern the twists in the chain of amino-acids
forming a protein. Each pair of angles is represented by a
point in a square whose limits, on each axis, correspond to
(−180°, 180°).

Atoms were treated as hard spheres and dihedral (φ and ψ) angles which cause spheres to collide correspond to sterically disallowed conformations (atoms come closer than sum of van der Waals radii) sterically allowed conformations of the polypeptide backbone (energetic stabilized).
Used computer models of small polypeptides to systematically vary φ and ψ with the objective of finding stable conformations. Ramachandran plot tells about the permitted (allowed)and disallowed rotation of dihedral angles and gives information about the stabilized structure or allowed structure of proteins (why alpha helix is more stable than beta sheet).

A Ramachandran plot (also known as a Ramachandran map or a
Ramachandran diagram or a [φ,ψ] plot), developed by
Gopalasamudram Narayana Ramachandran and Viswanathan

Ramachandran plot gives us idea about the orientation of
free side chain through what angle the orientation would
take place which depend up on the distance between the two
free side chain different aminoacid have different angle of
rotation that is diagramatically represented by ramachandran
the ramachandran plot application is that different
conformational changes in protien coould be known
