in before informatica powercenter 9 version lookup it is works passive tranformation ,after that 9X lookup works both passive and active ,
informatica provide aditional features, at the time of lookup creation (multi match) check bok option is there , when you check multi match its works active.
genraly we can get source table,target tables,flatfiles al lthous thinks and compare hetroginious sources using lookup.

I think look up is a transformation it is mostly used for
slowly changed dimenctions(SCD). with the help of look up
