self priming pumps are those pumps which does not require priming manually gear pump is an ex for this in centrifugal pumps priming is mainly done to ensure that the delivery valve is completly filled with water other wise it will suck air and may damage the pump.

The pump which do not need priming before starting is
called self priming pump. This type of pumps are mainly
used for pumping fluid from pit.Vertical pumps are mostly
suction & casing are submearged in fluid so vertical pumps
do not need self priming(It is already primed).
