Explain the operation principle, advantages and
disadvantages of the following converters:
a) A 12 pulse converter
b) A Switch-mode inverter
c) A thyristor inverter
Answer / Lalit Kumar Saini
a) A 12 pulse converter operates using twelve active pulses per cycle to produce a near sinusoidal output current waveform. This is achieved by connecting six diodes and six transistors in series-parallel configuration. Advantages include lower harmonic distortion, higher efficiency, and better power factor. Disadvantages include complexity and higher cost due to the need for additional components.
b) A Switch-mode inverter (SMI) is a power conversion device that converts DC input voltage to AC output by switching electronic devices on and off at high frequencies. Advantages include high efficiency, compact size, lightweight, and ability to produce various output waveforms. Disadvantages include the potential for high-frequency noise, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and complex control requirements.
c) A thyristor inverter is a power electronic converter that utilizes thyristors to convert DC input to AC output. Thyristors are switched on when a forward voltage is applied, and they remain on until the current drops below a certain threshold. Advantages include simplicity, reliability, and low cost. Disadvantages include poor harmonic distortion, slow switching times, and limited ability to handle high frequencies.
