Answer / jigar patel

Canned reports are the predefined reports, where in which you get the requirement from the Client through a requirement specification document. Canned reports are developed by BI-Developers. Canned reports are meant for END USERS or CLIENTS who are not supposed to have any technical knowledge.

Adhoc reporting is functionality/feature provided by BI tools where users can create reports on their on using the Business Schema..In Microstrategy language it is the ability of the tool where business-users can create reports on the fly using any of the attributes or metrics from the project schema.

In ad-hoc reporting, technical user(BI-Developers) set up the BI solution, connect it to the data-sources, establish security parameters and determine which objects business users can see. From that point on, the actual reports are created by BUSINESS USERS. Its like creating platform from BUSINESS USERS where they can create reports for themselves without requiring any technical knowledge. So that business users can provide live reporting to the END USERS or CLIENTS.
