Why DG set rating in KVA

Answer / bijaleee baba
Any power generating devides are rated as VA and all power
consuming devices (Load) are rated in Watts. For Example :
Inverter / DG are rated in KVA and loads like Bulb / fan /
Electric ketel Iron etc are rated in Watts

Answer / sara
KVA=VI*power factor
Efficiency of DG sets depends on the type of load used. the
manufacturer doesn't know what the type of load(inductive-
lagging-PF, capacitive-leading-PF) is to be used. so they
don't consider the power factor here, they take it as
unity.PF.
KVA=VI*(1) hence DG ratings are in KVA.

A generator set is the combination of and engine to create
power and
an alternator to change that power into electricity.
The engine turns a shaft that in turn is connected to the
alternator
This turning of the alternator creates the electrical power.
As there are different types of power all over the world,
different generator sets are built to create different
forms of electrical power.
DG Sets are the Sources which provides power NOT CONSUMING
the power,so KVA determines how much amount of power could
be genertaed from a specific DG Set in short how much the
DG set is capable of creating Amperes at certain voltage
level
For Motors....they are the power consuming devices act as a
resistive/condutive/indudtive load where reactive power is
playing part.....

it's not only for DG set, any electrical machine rating will
be in KVA! it's bcos, efficiency of a m/c depends on losses!
at the time manufacturing manufacturer doesn't know at what
powerfactor the machine may be used! AS LOSSES ( COPPER)
DEPENDS ON CURRENT IT TAKES! HENCE THE RATING IN KVA!

its ok mr. santosh but why motors rating in KW as motor is
also a machine.
| Is This Answer Correct ? | 19 Yes | 10 No |
Answer / shaik imtiaz ahamad
because it is independent of power factor as KW is dependent of PF.

in simple.. there are two types of losses (depending upon load) in dg.. copper losses and iron losses. copper losses is because of current And iron losses is because of voltage load on it.And in other words rating in kva of dg shows the proper capacity of dg with its all types of voltage and current load.

Generaly Transformer & Generator ratings in KVA because we
use supply from this device
And Motor ratings in KW because we not use supply form this
device
| Is This Answer Correct ? | 13 Yes | 12 No |
Answer / deepesh dhasmana
KVA rating is given to any equipment which supply electrical
energy, & KW is given to any moter which uses electrical
energy AS IT INPUT

Voltage loss is depend upon the cores (V) and copper losses dependent upon the winding (I). In order differentiate these two things this is not given in KW.

Why we are designed only 11Kv and 6.6Kv Alternators, not 33Kv Alternators and Power Transmission side we are designed only 220kv, 120kv, 66kv, 33kv, 11kv, and 440volts, not 20kv, 50kv, 100kv.
